Group Therapy creates a microscopic version of one's social world. People benefit from talking with others who are going through the same types of experiences and find that they are not alone. Strong groups can become like functional families. They nurture, support, challenge and provide a safe place for learning valuable relationship skills.
There is great potential for learning in situations when one is able to get input from others on his/her behavior. The group offers feedback in a constructive and supportive atmosphere on how words sound, what one's body language is saying and how to say something in a kind, assertive, diplomatic way. Group members support one another in learning and practicing more effective behaviors. It helps to know that others are listening and interested in one’s well being.
Group therapy can benefit most people, especially those who tend to be quiet and shy. It is possible to gain personally in a group session without saying anything. By identifying similarities, individuals can learn from how others relate and work on their issues. Learning to be effective in communicating feelings, needs and thoughts comes from practice with others as well as using others as models. The work of other group members can spark off feelings and insights that were not previously in ones self-awareness.
